OutreachArts' Founder Retires
After nearly 25 years in the outreach field, Emmy® Award-Winning Writer-Filmmaker, Richard T. Wilson (pictured above) is retiring from OutreachArts. As a result, the company will only be producing work on a limited basis from here on out, giving Wilson more time to spend on his second company, Mad Shelley Films. In addition to Mad Shelley Films, Wilson has also taken up teaching the next generation of film artists as a college Professor - and is, reportedly, enjoying every minute of it!
In the meantime, Wilson would like to send a heartfelt thanks to all our OutreachArts clients from over the years - adding that, 'together we've told many stories - that changed many lives'!

OutreachArts Sister Co. has a HIT!
Mad Shelley Films' UNDER THE FLOWERS Receives Accolades & Hollywood Honors
It’s already been quite a year for OutreachArts' Emmy® Award-Winning Writer-Filmmaker, Richard T. Wilson with his acclaimed Mad Shelley Films supernatural web series, Under the Flowers winning Official Selection honors in L.A.'s First Glance Film Festival and the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards, engaging several interested Hollywood producers and being honored with a prestigious Accolade Global Film Award. Ryan Cole of UK site Movie-Blogger.com recently asked the filmmaker about the connection between his past OutreachArts work and his recent Mad Shelley Films output...
Maple Ave was produced through your educational film company OutreachArts, and focused on at-risk teens. Given some of the events and characters in both The Halloween Girl and Under The Flowers, would you say there are certain themes threading them all together?
Yes – there really is no difference between my OutreachArts work and the Mad Shelley stuff. I told the same stories via the Maple Ave series, etc...that I’m telling now; people struggling with their inner life. Whether it manifests as depression, self-injury, etc. I’m just trying to create a way for people to talk about these traditionally uncomfortable subjects. As a former at-risk teen myself, I was very driven to turn things around for others who are suffering.
So the creation of Mad Shelley Films was a way to work on a broader canvas?
Yes, it was.

OutreachArts Hits the Red Carpet!
Award-Winning Problem Gambling Dramas Screened in NYC & L.A.
Two award-winning OutreachArts dramas made their film festival debuts this fall; 'Empty Spaces' at the REEL Recovery Film Festival in NYC and 'Break Even' at the Awareness Film Festival in Los Angeles! ‘Empty Spaces’, created for the New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) and honored with an Accolade Award in 2015, focuses on senior citizens suffering from gambling addiction and the impact it has on their family and friends. ‘Break Even’, created for the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey and the winner of a 2016 Gold Communicator Award, looks at online gambling addiction from the perspective of two family members privately struggling with the disease.
'Empty Spaces' was such a hit at the New York festival that the REEL Recovery organizers asked to screen the powerful family drama in L.A. as well (it will make its West Coast debut on Oct. 26th). Meanwhile, 'Break Even' had the honor of making its West Coast premiere at L.A. Live's Regal Cinema - home to many a Hollywood movie premiere. OutreachArts' Richard Wilson remarked, "It was very exciting to see both films up on the big screen - but more than a little surreal to see us on a screen home to Hollywood premieres! Having said that, I'm happy to report that everyone looked pretty wonderful up there..." These screenings reflect OutreachArts ongoing mission to spread their awareness messages to an even wider audience - while still creating outside the box.

OutreachArts' Filmmaker Honored at Int’l Film Fest!
Writer-Director, Richard T. Wilson broadens his reach with ‘The Halloween Girl’
OutreachArts’ Emmy® Award-Winning Filmmaker, Richard T. Wilson was recently honored at the 49th WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival (TX) with a Gold Remi Award for his critically-acclaimed drama, ‘The Halloween Girl’. This marks the latest in a string of awards and honors the Writer-Director has received for work he’s created just within the last year. From Telly, Accolade, Davey and Best Shorts Awards to inclusion in festivals like the Reel Recovery Film Festival, KoronisFest and the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards, Wilson’s brand of searing family drama appears to be everywhere these days - including Hollywood! “I was just hoping to reach out to a wider audience - but premiering ‘The Halloween Girl’ at Hollywood’s Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards - that was an unexpected honor! “, Wilson recently said.
Wilson went on to explain that while OutreachArts’ new sister company, Mad Shelley Films (producer of ‘The Halloween Girl’) is more entertainment-driven, he’s still ‘writing about the same things; families in crisis, families in need’. So, with the exception of its paranormal storyline, ‘The Halloween Girl’, he says, is a very close cousin to his OutreachArts’ work - particularly his Emmy® Award-Winning ‘Maple Ave’ series. In fact, like the ‘Maple Ave’ series, ‘The Halloween Girl’ is already introducing Wilson’s work to an international audience (the film makes its London debut later this year) - so, STAY TUNED! Who knows where Wilson’s work will pop up next…?

OutreachArts' Problem Gambling Awareness Mission
Six New Problem Gambling Films Unveiled in 2015
For Emmy® Award-Winning film company, OutreachArts, problem gambling awareness has not only become a mainstay but a mission. Since 2001, the nationally recognized production company has created over 40 acclaimed dramas with nearly half of those same films targeting problem gambling. “It went from an interesting assignment to something of a vocation,” says OutreachArts’ Writer-Director, Richard T. Wilson, regarding the company’s journey to problem gambling activism. In fact, Wilson cites the use of his 2015 Telly Award-Winning film, 'He's Not The Same' at NCPG’s 2015 Legislative Briefing (about gambling addicted Veterans) in Washington, D.C. as a personal and professional highlight - ‘better than winning an Emmy,’ he says. With that in mind, it’s no surprise then that the company has turned out no less than six problem gambling dramas this past year. What follows is a list of these same 2015 films (with links to view) -
READY OR NOT / END GAME - a two part film project, it was created for the Indiana Problem Gambling Awareness Program and highlights PTSD and gambling addiction among the Indiana National Guard.
FIVE FACES - a 2015 Davey Award Winner, this dramatic PSA campaign was created for the Nebraska Gamblers Assistance Program to highlight the many faces of problem gambling.
BREAK EVEN - created for The Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ, the film looks at online gambling addiction from the perspective of two family members privately struggling with the disease.
EMPTY SPACES - a 2015 Accolade Award Winner, created for The New York Council on Problem Gambling, looks at the issue of Seniors suffering from gambling addiction and the impact it has on their family and friends.
EASY OUT - created for The Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ, the film looks at the unique challenges facing a widowed, urban Senior struggling with gambling addiction.
These days, OutreachArts’ production schedule fills up very quickly and 2016 looks to be no exception. So, for more information, please contact them today at [email protected].

New Film Focuses on Seniors & Gambling Addiction
EMPTY SPACES marks 4th OutreachArts film for NYCPG
For adults 65 and over, gambling is one of the most common and preferred recreational activities. So, it’s no surprise then that gambling addiction rates are also on the rise among today’s Seniors - and, as more baby boomers retire, that number is only expected to grow.
So, it’s no surprise then that the New York Council on Problem Gambling is working hard to bring awareness to this issue via their latest film offering, ‘Empty Spaces'. The short drama, created by Emmy® Award-Winning, OutreachArts, takes a hard look at the issue of Seniors suffering from gambling addiction and the impact it has on their family and friends.
The following information is taken from the NY Council’s site -
WHY DO SENIORS GAMBLE?
* There are many reasons senior citizens (ages 65 and up) are at risk for becoming addicted to gambling. For one, gambling has been identified as one of the most common social activities among adults over 65. With trips to the casino and bingo nights becoming preferred recreational options for seniors, it is a natural reaction for addiction rates to increase.
* Seniors without family or friends frequently visiting may be lonely, and no employment to occupy their time can cause boredom. Widows may also use social activities such as gambling to distract from feelings of loss.
* A recent study found that 70 percent of seniors had gambled in the previous year, and that one in 10 had bet more than he or she could comfortably afford to lose.
* It’s important to recognize that gambling addiction can suddenly manifest in a senior with no prior history of gambling. Seniors tend to have special vulnerabilities such as an abundance of free time as well as a need to seek relief from physical and emotional pain.
* If we take a moment to consider the demographics of casino patrons, according to the American Gaming Association, 36 percent of the U.S. population ages 50 to 64 and 28 percent of individuals 65 and older visited a casino in 2012. The fastest growing group of problem gamblers is female seniors, which is mainly due to the loss of a spouse, as women often have longer lifespans than men. - New York Council on Problem Gambling

Award-Winning 'HE'S NOT THE SAME' Aids Sen. Elizabeth Warren's Push for Amendment to Study Problem Gambling
New Films Focus On National Guard Members Struggling
with PTSD & Gambling Addiction
OutreachArts continues its focus on returning Veterans suffering with PTSD and problem gambling in the new film project, ‘Ready or Not’ / ‘End Game’ created for the Indiana Problem Gambling Awareness Program of Indiana University. With a special focus on the National Guard, ‘Ready or Not’ (the first of the two part film) focuses on the psychological fallout of Guard member, Bill who, after returning home from Afghanistan, tragically turns to casino gambling to cope with his PTSD. The second part of the film, ‘End Game’ follows Bill’s recovery and the challenges he faces on his journey to a better life for him and his family.
“Gambling addiction is a serious health problem that affects veterans and active-duty service members,” says the National Council on Problem Gambling’s Executive Director, Keith S. Whyte. “It is highly co-occurring with other serious conditions and complicates the treatment of these disorders. In addition, gambling addiction has disastrous consequences for the veteran and his or her family.”
Whyte also makes clear that though 1 percent to 3 percent of the American public experience gambling problems in any given year, “studies consistently find rates among age-matched veterans are significantly higher, and highest among minorities. Rates are even higher among veterans seeking treatment for some other disorder.”
With OutreachArts recent Telly Award win for last year’s Vet-centered drama, ‘He’s Not The Same’ (created for the New York Council on Problem Gambling) and that film’s recent appearance at a Senate Briefing on Vets and Problem Gambling (courtesy of National Council on Problem Gambling’s Executive Director, Keith S. Whyte), the film’s Emmy® Award-Winning writer-director, Richard Wilson has high hopes for ‘Ready or Not’ / ‘End Game’ as well,
“Working with the Indiana Problem Gambling Awareness Program on these films was an absolute pleasure. Their invaluable insights and commitment to reaching out to Guard members and their families was a source of ongoing inspiration for all of us. We look forward to doing more work together in the future…”
Speaking of the future, OutreachArts has series of problem gambling film projects still to come in 2015 (for NE, NJ, & NY respectively) - and they’re already filling up the calendar for 2016! Wilson says the company is on the road to being fully booked for 2016 before the end of 2015. So, for more information on how OutreachArts can create a film for your organization, please contact us today at [email protected].

New Film Explores Problem Gambling's
Devastating Impact on Family
The CT Council on Problem Gambling unveils powerful new drama, 'You Know Me'
Missing financial statements, unexplained cash advances on credit cards, 'misplaced' valuables and disturbing calls from creditors are just some of the warning signs that a loved one may be struggling with a gambling problem. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, approximately 2 million adults are compulsive or pathological gamblers with 4 to 6 million falling into the problem gambler category. One third of these same problem gamblers have children at home under 18. In late 2013, the Connect icut C ouncil on Problem Gambling reached out to problem gambling film specialist & Emmy® Award-Winner, OutreachArts to create a drama that would help connect these same facts to the raw emotions expierienced by family members - the result is 'You Know Me'. Illustrating one family's insidious break-down at the hands of problem gambling, a PSA was also created from the affecting family drama and was recently unveiled at the Council's October conference. Interim Executive Director, Cheryl Chandler said the PSA was 'very well received' and many viewers planned to visit the Council's site to view the full film. New Film Highlights Veterans and Gambling Addiction
As the longest war in American history draws to a close, the psychological fallout among returning Veterans is only now just beginning to be felt. Suffering with PTSD, many Vets turn to alcohol, drugs - and, yes, even gambling to cope. The New York Council on Problem Gambling have responded to this growing crisis of Vet-centered gambling addiction with the new OutreachArts drama, ‘He’s Not The Same’. The short film tells the story of a young Vet returning home from Afghanistan whose life is turned upside down by gambling addiction, tearing both him and his family apart.
Whyte, who helped on the film, also makes clear that though 1 percent to 3 percent of the American public experience gambling problems in any given year, “studies consistently find rates among age-matched veterans are significantly higher, and highest among minorities. Rates are even higher among veterans seeking treatment for some other disorder.”
‘He’s Not The Same’ is the third film OutreachArts has created for the New York Council on Problem Gambling, and Emmy® Award-Winning writer-director, Richard Wilson’s personal favorite.
“I’ve wanted to reach out to returning Vets for some time now and was thrilled when the Council presented this opportunity. I felt an enormous responsibility to get this right, so the Vets I interviewed were going to be key to the project’s success…”
Among the Veterans Wilson interviewed for the film, 27 year old, Glenside, PA resident, Zachary Ziegler would prove a critical resource - and also become the film’s star.
“Zach is an excellent actor; he’d done work for us before enlisting. Once this project was entrusted to OutreachArts, it was a no-brainer to give him a call - his insights into the character were invaluable”, Wilson recalled, noting that Ziegler, also a singer-songwriter, contributed some original music to the film as well.
In fact, ‘He’s Not The Same’ marks the 13th problem gambling-themed film the Emmy® Award-Winning OutreachArts has created in as many years and, according to Wilson, there’s more to follow…
“As the gaming industry expands, we find we’re adding more and more problem gambling projects. Our production slate for 2015 is already filling up - clearly, there’s still a lot of work to do…”

The Tennessee Department of Mental Health's Shield of Care, a ground breaking suicide prevention curriculum designed specifically for staff in juvenile justice facilities has been accepted for inclusion in a Best Practice Registry which is a collaboration between the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and SAMHSA. The multi-pronged training, called Shield of Care: Protecting Juvenile Justice Youth from Suicide, also features a video component, the compelling drama,*‘Second Glances’. "The film is essentially made up of three vignettes, illustrating youth at various stages of suicidal ideation, " says the film's writer-director, Richard Wilson, "The whole OutreachArts team really threw themselves into the making of this for the TDMH. It's clear that taking a 'second glance' really can make all the difference here. It goes without saying that we're all deeply honored by the Best Practice recognition - it was a wonderful project to work on!" The Shield of Care training was based upon available research in a collaborative process that included Tennessee's child serving departments and agencies. This ground-breaking training was also greatly informed by frontline staff working in the juvenile justice system. The funding for the development of this curriculum is from a federal youth suicide prevention and intervention grant, funded via the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act awarded to the Tennessee Department of Mental Health. For more information on the Shied of Care curriculum, please contact, Lygia Williams at [email protected].

"I had a chance to watch the Maryland Public Television (MPT) Special on Self-Injury and Cutting and I have to say it was an incredible hour of education and attention to a very serious topic. I think the directors of the drama did a great job and MPT really did their job bring quality programming to the public regarding a topic that is very sensitive and typically never discussed."

"Maple Ave. Films “The Hurting: Cutting for Relief” was well received!!!! This show reached the public in ways in which we may never know. I do know that we helped someone that night, and for that I’m grateful. Thank you so much for producing a program such as this. We did receive several calls. ... We had great interviews and everything was flawless. .... On behalf of MPT I thank you deeply from my heart. I’ve learned so much. Keep in touch. You’re an amazing producer."
